Who is eligible to Audition?
YATS productions are cast by audition and open to any child within certain ages based on the type of production. The October production is a large cast (35-45 actors) show open to children ages 11 to 18 at the time of the production and to actors who are taking a gap year and have been in a previous production. A gap year is an academic year, taken by a student as a break between high school and university or college education. In general, casting for all productions is based on an audition. Artistic ability is the primary criteria in making casting decisions but the actor’s experiences in YATS activities including workshops, number of years participating in YATS and parental involvement will also be taken into consideration.

What do you need to do at an audition?
- PREPARE: We can’t cast everyone who takes an audition, you’re going to need all the help you can get, so we strongly encourage you to consider signing up for one of our FREE Pre-audition Workshops, or the Audition Masterclass.
- SINGING AUDITION: You must prepare a song of your choosing. It does not need to be from the show that is being cast but it should be from musical theater – NO rock, NO rap. We do not need the entire song – 45-60 seconds will show us what we need. The song must be memorized and have musical accompaniment. If you select one of the songs here, we will provide the accompaniment in the audition. If you choose something else, you will need to download the accompaniment track and provide it on a USB memory stick. There are many accompaniment tracks available on the internet. The accompaniment must be instrumental only, with no vocals. We want to hear YOU, not another singer. Please prepare so that you can perform it as if you were in a show on stage.
- HARMONY AUDITION: You are also required to prepare a short piece of music to demonstrate your ability to sing in harmony (parts). We will provide (1) the sheet music pdf and (2) the following tracks: (a) a track of your part played alone, (b) a track with your part highlighted with the other parts in the background and (c) the backing track without your part played — you will sing this with this last track by yourself during the audition. This does not need to be memorized.
You will choose only one vocal part to prepare based on your vocal range: alto, tenor or bass. Note that you cannot audition with the soprano part, as that is the melody, so women and treble voices should normally choose the alto part. Click here to download the part for: Alto, Tenor, or Bass. - DANCE AUDITION: You will perform a dance routine with other young actors. There will be reels to watch to learn the steps and practice the moves.
