Meet Julien! YATS Communications Director

Julien Attuil-Kayser tells us, “Three years ago, I stumbled upon the enchanting world of YATS, all thanks to my daughter Lilah’s love for musical theater. Little did I know that this would mark the beginning of my incredible journey with YATS. Initially, I joined the costume team for Annie and then found myself assisting backstage. However, my passion for capturing the extraordinary moments on stage and backstage through photography led me to take charge of YATS’ social media and to ultimately join the Executive Board.”

He added, “What drew me to YATS was not just the captivating performances, but also the extraordinary sense of community. Surrounded by dedicated volunteers, both seasoned professionals and warm-hearted enthusiasts, I immediately felt like I was part of a big, welcoming family! YATS has not only become a shared passion but a true family affair, with my wife, Anne, now leading the costume team and our youngest daughter, Salomé, assisting us in these roles. At its core, YATS promotes values that resonate with me: the power of learning through art, unwavering professionalism, respect for one another, and an unyielding openness to the world. It’s more than a musical: it’s a school of life for young talents, brimming with joy, discipline, exchange, and boundless opportunities for growth.”

Julien shared his thoughts on YATS communications: “I have the privilege of bringing our exceptional shows into the ‘spotlight’. We traditionally stage productions in the fall, but we’re not limited to that we have expanded to spring performances, with Urinetown in 2022 and The Humans in 2023, and we even added a touch of summer magic this year with Into the Woods. My role revolves around keeping our community alive on social networks and spreading the word about our incredible activities. If you’re eager to catch the upcoming show dates, discover our acting or singing classes, or sneak a peek behind the scenes at rehearsals and backstage moments, make sure to follow YATStrasbourg on Facebook and Instagram. We can’t wait to have you join us for a journey filled with musical wonders. See you soon in the spotlight!”

YATS Alumni in the Spotlight: Adrian Grimsmo

Past productions: Grease, Oklahoma!, Assassins, Into the Woods

Adrian shared with us, “After finishing high school at the European School of Strasbourg, I started my bachelor’s degree in European Studies at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. I am currently in my third and final year and now live in Leiden, a small city next to The Hague. I still try keep myself involved with the arts as much as possible! Ever since starting university, every summer I return to Strasbourg to take part in the summer shows, such as Assassins where I played John Hinckley, and most recently in the YATS alumni production of Into the Woods, in which I played the Mysterious Man. I really enjoy performing, but also love to watch movies and live theater so I go to the cinema or try to see musicals in London’s West End.”

He continued, “YATS has meant and still means a lot to me and has been a big part of my life – 100%! Before doing my first ever audition for Grease, I had never done any performances – singing or dancing; however, through YATS I discovered something about myself: I had no idea how much I would love taking part in a musical and from the very first moment that I became a part of the cast, I felt as if I was a part of a big family. I have met so many wonderful people that I still consider some of my closest friends today.”

A successful Migration conference

The Fiddler storylineprovides an exploration of migration and the preservation of cultural identity. These themes resonate with the issues faced by migrants and refugees today, including those affected by the war in Ukraine, which is where our musical takes place.

On 20 September at Le Cube at Gymnase Jean Sturm, YATS, with the support of the Embassy of the United States of America in France and the U.S. Consulate General in Strasbourg, held a conference dedicated to the topic of migration, with a focus on Europe and the Ukrainian refugees crisis. Key-note speakers (pictured) Mykola Gnatovskyy, Judge of the European Court of Human Rights, elected in respect of Ukraine, and Anne Kayser-Attuil, Adviser to the Office of the Council of Europe Secretary General’s Special Representative on Migration and Refugees, shared their informative perspectives with the Fiddler cast and other YATS enthusiasts. Thank you to those who were involved in this thought-provoking evening!

Tagora – upcoming performances

We want you! Looking for a Technical Director

The Technical Director (TD) has the responsibility for the technical operations for YATS performances and workshops, including lighting, sound, set design assistance, and some construction.

One of the main activities for the Technical Director is to lead a weekly theater technical workshop for collège and lycée students, covering sound, lighting, video recording. Workshops are taught in English. The TD also oversees the workshop students’ involvement in the YATS productions.

As YATS is primarily an English-language volunteer-based organization working with children, the candidate should display a history of working in this environment. YATS pays the TD for the workshop classes and, therefore, the TD must be able to work as an auto-entrepreneur in France.
